There are walks of all standards to be encountered locally from flat lakeside walks to strenuous fells. We are not far from the tourist honeypot of Keswick with it's shops and Derwentwater. A short drive away is Lorton Vale with Buttermere and Crummockwater along with Alfred Wainwright's favourite fell walk and last resting place, Haystacks. We have a good range of Wainwright guides, maps and other guide books available and are happy to give advice on walks locally.
We are close to Sustrans cycle routes 10 & 71 and there are some excellent mountain biking trails through the nearby woods and hills.
Bassenthwaite Lake is the only actual lake in the Lake District (the others are 'waters' 'meres' and 'tarns') and is one of the longest and deepest. It has been designated a SSSI Nature Reserve and is home to Britain's rarest fish, the Vendace, which has survived here since the Ice Age. Activity projects around the lake are available through Bassenthwaite Reflections.
We also have an amazing variety of birds including the rare Osprey which nests nearby.
